The Empty Tomb and the Wisdom of God
The differentiator pitting the Christian faith against all other world religions is that we have a Saviour who predicted and performed His own bodily resurrection. We worship a Saviour who once was dead, but now is alive forevermore. The one thing that Satanic forces, Jewish leaders, human minds and Roman power wanted to prevent was this very resurrection, or at least a staged version thereof. Yet in the wisdom of God, all opposition to the purposes of God worked in God’s favour to help prove the truth, “He is not here: for He is risen” (Mt 28:6a). We can examine this together in Matthew 27:66 and revel in the wisdom of God.
Jewish Precaution “So they went…”
The Jewish leaders feared a scheme to steal the body. Pilate had already provided them with a set of guards, so they went to make the Lord’s tomb as secure as possible. Unholy Jews sought to keep Christ inside, but the Holy One whose body never saw corruption (Ps 16:10) could never be prevented from being raised from the death. Their going could never stop Christ’s leaving the sepulchre.
Human Prevention “…made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone…”
It was an added means of security to push a great stone in front of the cave’s opening. It was secured with a seal so that no one could move it. The multiple women going to the tomb wondered how the stone was going to be moved for them to perform their acts for proper Jewish burial (Mk 16:3). But the body that was laid in the tomb was already gone when the angel rolled the stone aside. At Lazarus’ resurrection, the stone was rolled away first to release the man. Yet no one had to let the Saviour out; rather the sealed stone was rolled away to let us in. No body and no bones; only a place where the Lord once laid.
Roman Power “…with a watch.”
A watch of soldiers was set at the cross (v36), now a watch would be set at the tomb. The leaders thought that the mighty power of Rome kept Jesus of Nazareth upon the cross, and now they will keep the body in the tomb. The foolishness of men! The authority to resurrect lay in the man whose holy body was wholly dormant inside the guarded tomb. In the wisdom of God, He guided the hearts of mankind who professed to be wise and powerful to ensure no attempted theft or elaborate scheme would occur. Rather all the works of men to foil the prophetic words of our Lord Jesus have only proved them. His body laid without life until the appointed third day. As we marvel at the wisdom of God we can joyfully say, “The Lord is risen indeed!” (Lu 24:34).
